Childnet 2017 Film Competition Launches

Online safety charity Childnet call on young people to ‘Be the Change’ and enter the 8th Childnet Film Competition.

Childnet Competition 2017Leading online safety charity, Childnet, have launched the eighth Childnet Film Competition to encourage young people aged 7-18 to create a short film to educate their peers about staying safe online.

With the aim of showcasing how young people can inspire others to make the internet a better place, the competition gives young people the opportunity to harness their creativity and understanding of online safety issues. This year’s theme focuses on how young people can ‘Be the Change’ and make the internet a better and safer place for all.

As Becky Nancarrow, Education Projects Officer at Childnet, said:

"Over the past eight years, hundreds of young people have taken part in our Film Competition, demonstrating their incredible creative skills as well as educating and inspiring their peers about staying safe online. It’s clear to us that young people can be creators of change and help shape a better internet for all."

Be the change – taking part
The Film Competition is split into two age categories and schools or youth organisations must oversee and submit entries on behalf of all participants. Childnet have developed resource packs including storyboard templates, guides to filmmaking and other useful documents to help schools and youth organisations engage and support young people in making their films. The top three films in each category will be invited to a private screening at the BFI in London and the winners will be awarded film kits for their school or youth organisation.

  • Primary aged young people (7 – 11) are invited to create a 60 second film in response to the theme: ‘Be the Change – It starts with us’, looking at how young people can work together to make the internet a great and safe place.

  • Secondary aged young people (11 – 18) are invited to create a 2 minute film in response to the theme: ‘Be the Change – We’re online for good’, looking at what young people are doing to have a positive effect online.
  • For both age groups Childnet are looking for creative, imaginative films which reflect a positive and inspiring message. Young people might express their ideas through comedy, animation, or music. They will be encouraged to consider different filmmaking styles such as creating an advert, campaign or documentary.

Childnet Competition 2017 ImageAs one of the Secondary school category finalists from 2016 said about their film:

"The message of the film is to think about how many people there are on the internet and how easy it is to make differences to the world. The way your actions, even very small actions, can affect millions of people quickly is both scary and useful at the same time, and you must remember that it is your choice to affect people positively or negatively."

In order to register a group of talented young people you know, then please send an email to film@childnet.com for an information pack. The closing date for entries is Monday 12th June 2017 at 5pm.

Join the conversation on social media
To inspire young people to help others stay safe online, entrants are being encouraged to share their film competition stories on social media using the hashtag #bethechange. Whether this is a message about the issues being explored, a picture from the creative process or even a tip from the young filmmakers, schools and youth organisations can share their updates with @Childnet.

    Safer Internet Day 2017

Safer Internet Day 2017 set to be biggest yet

SID2017 LogoSafer Internet Day is the UK’s biggest campaign to inspire children and young people to ‘Be the change’ and use technology positively and responsibly.

Activities from films and a photography project, to lesson plans and presentations, schools are encouraged to deliver engaging activities for Safer Internet Day and empower their students, staff and parents and carers to use technology safely, positively and responsibly.

    Safer Internet Day 2017
On 7th February 2017, Safer Internet Day will be celebrated globally with the slogan ‘Be the change: Unite for a better internet’ with millions of people around the world uniting for a better internet.

Coordinated in the UK by the UK Safer Internet Centre the celebration sees hundreds of schools and organisations get involved to help promote the safe, responsible and positive use of digital technology for children and young people.

The Safer Internet Day 2016 campaign reached 40% of all UK children, with schools across the country running whole school activities, lessons, holding parent sessions or getting involved in the social media campaign.

    How can schools get involved?
Schools across the UK can get involved in a number of ways:
    • Engage students by running assemblies or class activities – or join the SID2017 photography campaign to empower your students to create engaging images that communicate a message.
    • Reach out to parents and carers by running a session or sharing information.
    • Showcase what you are doing to support the day by joining the supporters list and sharing on social media.
    • Join the social media campaign – find out how to get involved in the biggest global campaign about the safe use of technology and use the #giveasmile templates to encourage your pupils to create their own emoji or share positive messages.

The impact of Safer Internet Day involvement
Engaging in Safer Internet Day can have a hugely positive impact. Last year, out of those children and young people who had heard about or engaged with Safer Internet Day, 87% said that as a result they felt more confident about what to do if they were concerned about something online. This year already 300 schools have joined the official supporters list for Safer Internet Day 2017 and it looks set to be the biggest Safer Internet Day yet.

As Will Gardner, Director of UK Safer Internet Centre, said:

“Safer Internet Day is a moment in the year where children and young people, parents and carers and schools can all come together and talk openly and honestly about the positives of the internet as well as the potential risks.

“With an ever-changing landscape, it is more important than ever to equip young people with the critical thinking skills they need to navigate the online world.”

    E-safety Support - SID2017 Competition
Don't forget to take part in our annual SID competition. To get involved, all your pupils have to do is come up with a positive e-safety acronym using the words CHANGE or UNITE - inspired by the SID2017 theme, Be the Change: Unite for a better Internet.

This competition is open until midnight on February 6th 2017. Find out more

Childnet launch e-safety programme for primary schools

Innovative peer-to-peer education programme now open to all UK schools

Childnet Digital Leaders Childnet has announced that it is extending its innovative Childnet Digital Leaders Programme to all UK schools; putting young people at the forefront of educating their peers about staying safe online.

The new programme for primary schools was announced today, following a successful first year of the secondary schools programme that has seen over a thousand young people undergo training to equip them to educate their peers, parents and teachers about staying safe online.

This programme is delivered by leading internet safety charity Childnet as part of its work as one of three charities in the UK Safer Internet Centre, alongside its role coordinating Safer Internet Day which reached 40% of UK children in 2016.

    Outstanding e-safety practice

School inspectors in the UK have set out that outstanding e-safety provision in schools involves the active involvement and leadership of young people. However, evaluation data from the school self-assessment tool 360 Degree Safe finds that while this is improving year on year, it is still one of the weakest areas of e-safety provision in schools.

To help schools harness the power of youth voice and make e-safety learning fun and effective, Childnet is inviting schools to join its youth leadership programme to train young people to be peer educators in their school community.

    Power of community

The Childnet Digital Leaders Programme offers young people access to an exciting online community. In this community they will access training and support from Childnet’s expert team, record achievements and earn badges, and collaborate and share inspiration with schools across the UK.

This approach has been welcomed by the 13 primary schools involved in the pilot. As Carolyn Ellis-Gage from Norwich Road Academy said: "My pupils are really enthusiastic about the training and love working through and gaining the badges!"

Digital Leaders online platform for primary schools

This programme will build on Childnet’s work placing young people at the centre of creating a kinder and better internet. As Childnet CEO Will Gardner said:

“Children and young people have the power to help create a kinder online community and we want to harness their passion and knowledge to enable them to be role models for their peers and younger generations. It has been inspiring to see the huge range of activities delivered over the last year by Childnet Digital Leaders in secondary schools across the UK. We are now very excited to announce the launch of the programme for primary schools which we developed and tested with the involvement of 13 primary schools across the UK."
