New: Extremism Resources

We are delighted to announce the launch of our brand new resources covering the topic of extremism. The resources have been developed with the help of e-safety consultant, Tim Pinto and are designed to help all members of the school community (pupils, parents and staff) understand more about the issue of radicalisation and in particular the part the internet plays in encouraging people to consider extremist views.

These are the resources currently available:

Anti-radicalisation Checklist: Since 1st July, all schools have a duty under the Counter Terrorism And Security Act to keep children safe from harm, especially from the risks of radicalisation and extremism. This checklist will help identify what your school should have in place.

Assembly Plan: The main focus of this secondary assembly is to encourage pupils to think critically when using the internet and consider that bias and opinion is an intrinsic part of the internet.

It will cover a number of key areas:

• Is everything on the internet true?
• How do people use the internet to attract attention to their cause?
• Tips on how to evaluate web information

Parent Guide: This guide will help parents and carers learn more about the danger of their children being targeted by online extremists. The guide provides information to help them identify the issue of online radicalisation and gives suggestions on how to support their children with the threat of online extremism.

Staff Training This is a training module based on supporting the counter-terrorism strategy (PREVENT) in schools. Since the suicide bombings in London on July 7th 2005, work has taken place in communities to ensure that young people are not drawn into extremist behaviour especially when using the internet.

Extremism and Anti-Radicalisation Policy: This modal policy covers the schools duty for PREVENT and the Security and Terrorism Act (2015).

Secondary Lesson Plans: As part of our anti-radicalisation and extremism resources, the KS3 lesson focuses on critical thinking and will encourage students to check that content on the Internet is true. In the lesson for KS4, students will think about their likes and dislikes in life and who influences their choices.

COMING SOON - Primary Lesson Plans: Classroom resources to help educate younger pupils about the issue of extremism will be added soon.

The Anti-radicalisation checklist is available to all E-safety Support members (including free members), the assembly plan, lesson plans and parent guide are available to E-safety Support Premium members, while the online training and policy are available exclusively to E-safety Support Premium Plus members. Existing members can access the resources via the E-safety Support Dashboard.

Prevent Questionnaire
The Prevent Duty has come under fire in the media in recent weeks.

Some of the criticisms have been directed at the education systems capability of dealing with the issues, while others have suggested that the duty might have a negative impact.

We would welcome your opinions on these issues and would therefore invite you to complete our very short survey. All responses will be anonymous.

To take the survey, please click here.
